Of the various acids that make up the AHA group, glycolic acid has been shown to be one of the most effective in topical resurfacing. Glycolic acid has the smallest molecular structure and, thus, penetrates deepest into the skin. Glycolic acid acts upon the lipids, breaking them down and causing the sloughing off of the outer layer of dead cells.
